David Krut’s vibrant new space

PARKWOOD-BASED art company David Krut Projects has, in collaboration with Hadeda, created an innovative new platform for the arts and literature

Serene and sophisticated, 151 Parkwood brings together an array of decor pieces, the David Krut Bookstore, and a gallery space to host exhibitions and book launches.

“Walking through the garden, you enter a space likened to the home of Frida Khalo. It immediately feels like you are entrancing Mexican home as you’re surrounded by Trees of Life and rich, vibrantly coloured fabrics,” said David Krut Projects’ Claudia Bentel.

Decor pieces like decorative mirrors, bold light-fittings and hand-painted tiles were brought in from Central and South America by Hadeda’s Des Armstrong.

“People could spend many a peaceful afternoon feeding their minds on the selection of books in the bookshop,” she said.

Krut entered the publishing world in 1997 when he produced the first major publication on William Kentridge in CD-ROM format. In 1999 he published the Taxi artbook series, which were completed with 15 monographs on a selection of South Africa’s prominent artists.

“Krut soon realised the necessity for books in South Africa about local and international artists, so he began a small bookshop next to his workshop space in Parkwood. It was a combination of supply, demand and a passion for books that turned David Krut Publishing into the reputable bookshop we have today,” said Bentel.

The shop stocks a variety of local and international books about art, fashion, film, photography, graphic design, cooking, and decor, as well as a range of children’s books.

“We combined a retail space with Hadeda, and the collaboration is nothing short of enchanting,” she said.
