Cops nab armed, speeding taxi driver

Hillbrow police arrested a speeding taxi driver, who also tried to convince them that he too was a police officer.

According to police, the man initially evaded a Metro police road block at the corner of Leyds and Simmonds Streets, Braamfontein.

Police spokesperson Constable Mduduzi Zondo said the police intervention unit spotted the speeding taxi and gave chase.

Zondo said, “We managed to stop him and when he got out of his car, he introduced himself as a police officer.”

He said when police asked the suspect to produce his appointment card he only produced a police cap.

Upon searching the man, police found an unlicensed firearm, two different driver’s licences and live ammunition.

Zondo said, “The suspect was arrested and charged with being in possession of an unlicensed firearm, live ammunition and impersonating a police officer.”

According to Zondo the suspect claimed that he bought the gun in Jeppestown.

He said, “The suspect told the police that he was driving from where he bought the gun but he couldn’t lead them to where he bought it.”

Zondo added that the police were still trying to find the gun owner.

The 29-year-old suspect was expected to appear in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court.
