Guptas accused of disregarding building plan regulations

Saxonwold and Parkwood residents associations (Sapra) have been invited to a Thursday council meeting where the Gupta's latest controversy of flouting City building plan regulations would be under the spotlight.

This is according to the member of the associations Penelope Davidof, who said the association had raised the “irregular” extensions of the building by the Guptas on Saxonwold Drive with the council.

She said, “It is just a simple matter of council; we have objected to the irregular extension of the building and now the council has invited us to their meeting like any other party that would object to any issue. The media is trying to make an issue where there is nothing.”

At the council meeting the objectors would be able to formally raise their issues.

The politically-connected family had angered residents who are up in arms after the former apparently disregarded town planning regulations.

Accusations levelled against the Gupta family were that they had violated height restrictions, the number of dwelling units per site and contravened the Architects Act.

The council is expected to make a ruling on the matter and should it find the Guptas guilty, they are likely to be ordered to demolish their compound.

Association chairperson Tessa Turvey had been quoted as saying, “Sapra has objected based on the fact that the building exceeds the allowed coverage. We object to the re-zoning of a site to

legalise an already built structure.”
