Get your gaming on at A Maze

After the successful kick-off of the first international gaming and media art festival in Johannesburg last year, A Maze Interact is back.

The festival will aim to amaze visitors, and encourage them to discover games beyond the mainstream.

“It also aims to encourage creative people to deconstruct conventional computer games and go beyond established gaming concepts,” said Benjamin Keuffel of festival sponsors Goethe-Institut Johannesburg.

“Gaming, as the medium of 21st century life, is the basis of all the festival’s events.”

He said that the combination of “bold experimentation with the joy of playing” paved the way for the convergence of computer games and art.

“A Maze is more than just a festival – it’s an experience on different levels,” he said.

Keuffel invited people to participate in the conferences, workshops, exhibitions, performances and music events that make up the festival.

“It’s a public platform for sharing ideas, providing knowledge, creating lasting relationships and building a solid base for extended cultural exchange,” he said.

The festival will open on 5 September at Braamfontein’s iLounge rooftop at 7pm, and will be followed by an afterparty at Kitchener’s Carvery Bar.

Festival programme highlights will include exhibitions of African and European mobile games, computer games, local multiplayer games, board games, street games, video screenings, comics, and media art installations.

Panel discussions will include African public transport and its challenges to games and apps from Africa, and socio-political commentary in digital art and games in Africa.

The Pecha Kucha night and closing party will take place on 7 September at JoziHub, 44 Stanley Avenue, Milpark.
