M1 mudslide caused by vandals

JOBURG – The Johannesburg Roads Agency warned motorists about possible delays on the M1 southbound near Killarney due to a mudslide.

The mudslide was caused when vandals cut off a section of a water pipe in Newtown Avenue, situated above the M1.

“There will be possible delays until repairs are effected. In order to repair the damage, it is necessary to remove the mud, which is extremely wet and, due to the nature of the soil, will take approximately seven to 10 days to dry out,” said spokesperson Mosa Makhalima.

She said the agency would treat the repair of the embankment as an emergency and would minimise the reinstatement period as far as possible.

Makhalima requested anyone with information on the vandalism of the water pipe to come forward.

“City assets are under criminal attack, and community assistance is required to prevent further damage and loss of lives,” she said.

The agency apologised for any inconvenience caused, and thanked road users for their patience.
