Singing sensations against sexual violence

JOBURG - Youtube singing sensation Terra Naomi is set to visit South Africa for a charity concert hosted by the Kwanele Enuf-is-enuf campaign and the University of Johannesburg.

Naomi’s performance will be supported by Afro-folk singer-songwriter Bongeziwe Mabandla at the concert on 25 August at the UJ Arts Centre theatre.

Naomi, known as one of Youtube’s greatest musical success stories for her online hit, Say it’s possible, and winner of the first Youtube Award for best music video, completed two tours of Europe and the United Kingdom last year. Her songs have also featured in several films and television shows.

Mabandla’s music is a fusion of Xhosa folk rhythms and vocal techniques with contemporary ‘city suss’. He honours his Eastern Cape roots with the African guard bow instrument, uhadi, as well as contemporary folk singers who inspired him, including Tracy Chapman, Busi Mhlongo and Jabu Khanyile.

Speaking on behalf of the concert organisers, Tarryn Edwards said both artists supported the cause of Kwanele Enuf-is-enuf founder Andy Kawa.

“After a gruesome gang-rape in 2010, Kawa became one of numerous South African statistics. By speaking about it, she was able to touch the hearts of many victims who were suffering silently from an illness she terms ‘the aftermath’, the festering wounds of rape and abuse within body, soul and mind,” said Edwards.

Kawa made it her life’s mission to rally each person to be agents of change within our communities.

Kwanele Enuf-is-enuf is aligned with Lead SA’s Stop Rape campaign.

The concert will take place on 25 August at the UJ Arts Centre theatre, Kingsway Campus, corner of Kingsway Avenue and University Road, Auckland Park, at 4pm.
