Good Samaritans set the pigeon free

KILLARNEY - Two weeks ago I was moving some furniture in my apartment at Gleneagles with the assistance of security guard, Levy Chosi, and boiler-man, Selby Kuboni, both employees in the block.

At one stage Chosi went out onto the balcony and spotted one of Killarney’s ubiquitous pigeons snared in the Jacaranda tree on the corner of Second Avenue and Second Street.

The tree is about 50m tall and the bird was hanging upside down about 40m from the ground. Its leg was caught in a piece of twine and flapping strenuously in an effort to get free.

Chosi and Kuboni decided to rescue the bird. They were joined by two security guards from the adjoining complexes.

They purloined an extension ladder from Gleneagles, but this still left them with a 25m gap to reach the bird.

They fashioned a makeshift pole from plastic electrical tubing, broom handles and jacaranda branches with bits of wire and string.

A small crowd gathered to watch.

After many attempts they cut the twine and an exhausted, and presumably relieved, pigeon flew free
