On bail suspect arrested

BRAMLEY - A man who was out on bail for the attempted murder of his brother was arrested after a shootout with the police.

According to Bramley police, they were patrolling along 5th Road in Kew when they came across a charcoal Ford Fiesta with three men inside.

Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Moses Maphakela said the police tried to stop the vehicle but the driver refused to stop. Maphakela said, “The police chased the vehicle and called for backup. More police vehicles joined the chase until the suspects’ car bumped into a pavement and stopped at the corner of Homestead and Glen Roads, in Bramley.”

He said the three suspects got out of the car and tried to escape. “One suspect was shooting at the police while they were trying to chase him.” According to Maphakela the police returned fire and the suspect with the firearm fell down as he was shot in his thigh. He said two other suspects managed to run away. “Paramedics were called in and the suspect was treated on scene before he was sent to Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital under police guard.”

The 29-year-old suspect was expected to appear at the Hillbrow Magistrate’s Court soon. He was also charged for being in possession of an unlicensed firearm and a stolen car.
Maphakela also appealed to the public to assist the police with information that could lead to the arrest of the two suspects who were still at large.
