Student grows beans on Mars

OBSERVATORY - Five Sacred Heart College Grade 9 pupils were selected to represent the Johannesburg Region at the Eskom Expo for Young Scientists that was held in the East Rand.

The school’s young science whizzes are Prashil Daya, Cassidy Wood, Carol Els, Sean O’Shea and Paul Stansell.

The aim of the exposition is to develop scientists that would be able to identify a problem, analyse information, find solutions and communicate findings effectively. Teachers and experts in their fields judged the projects independently.

Sacred Heart College’s Paul Stansell received a gold medal for his scientific investigation. “I’ve always been fascinated by Mars,” he said, “I was especially excited when I heard of the Mars One programme, which aims to establish a Martian base by 2023. It made me curious as to how the first Martian’s would get food.” Stansell’s science teacher Lamorna Cantin said, “Paul simulated atmospheric and pressure conditions on Mars, and investigated the germination and growth of beans in a Martian atmosphere. Paul’s presentation was a mature piece of research.”
