Warmth for Alex elderly

ALEXANDRA - Elderly residents of this township will no longer have to bear the brunt of the cold weather.

A Marlboro company has gone out of its way to help the elderly of Alexandra fend off the bitingly cold winter season.

It has donated more than 1 000 jackets and 300 clothing items to charitable institutions in the township.

Rainbow Pepper Trading owner Avon Murcia said he was answering the call made by President Jacob Zuma to make this year’s Mandela Day bigger than ever before.

“We are a caring company that has the welfare of the community within our footprint at heart.

“We hope to make these donations from time to time throughout the year as our way of looking after old people who can no longer look after themselves, including young and vulnerable children,” said Murcia.

Receiving the donations, Father Cairns of the Roman Catholic Church at the Pan Africa Centre urged the recipients of the goods to put them to good use and not sell them in order to buy beer or nyaope.

“I ask the All Mighty to bless people like Avon Murcia in their life, business and giving spirit,” Father Cairns said.

The institutions that benefited included Itlhokomeleng Old Age Home, Joseph Gerard Home, St Vincent de Paul, the Hospice and Rehabilitation Centre in Alex, Kholofelo ya Josefa, the St Hubert Feeding Scheme and the Catholic creche which cares for orphaned and vulnerable children.
