Motorists warned against new jamming device

HILLBROW - Police had warned motorists to be cautious of the new jamming device that is used by car thieves to steal the cars or steal out of motor vehicles.

According to police reports the device had been used in areas like Braamfontein, Parktown, Killarney and surroundings. Police spokesperson Constable Mduduzi Zondo said in many cases a motorist would leave the car with the impression that it was locked only to return and find that there were missing valuables in the car. “They (drivers) would not see any signs of break-in because criminals use the device to prevent the car from locking when the driver is locking it.”

Zondo stated that the device looked like a small radio.

In a recent incident, police arrested a man in Braamfontein and was found in possession of the device. Upon further investigation police linked him to a series of theft out motor vehicles cases in the above-mentioned areas. The 28-year-old suspect from Soweto was expected to appear in the Hillbrow Magistrate’s Court soon.

Zondo urged motorists to be vigilant when they park their cars. “They must double check if their cars are really locked.”
