HILLBROW – Youth group Johannesburg Awakening Minds, also known as Jam, received a welcome donation of money from the Shakespeare Society of Southern Africa’s Johannesburg branch.

Actress Dorothy Ann Gould gives regular drama workshops with an emphasis on the works of William Shakespeare to the group.

Society chairperson Jo Warner said, “These homeless young men are at the cutting edge of reality, and it is a joy to see how much they imbue their learnt speeches from well-known plays with the experiences of their own lives and, at the same time, respond to the power of the Bard’s words.

“The society was delighted to give some support to this highly commendable project.”

Well-known actress and director Dame Janet Suzman visited the group and watched their work with great interest.

According to Warner, the group chose the name Johannesburg Awakening Minds for the acronym Jam because they said jam was sweet and they experienced very little sweetness in their lives.

The group began as part of the Good Shepherd Organisation and now meet at Christ Church, Hillbrow.
