Celebrating a milestone

Madiba was honoured ahead of his 95th birthday at Bertrams Junior School in Johannesburg.

Lead SA, together with the Nelson Mandela Centre of Memory and Saheti School put on a special programme at the small inner city school to celebrate Madiba’s legacy and life.

Special guests at the event included Deputy Minister of Education, Enver Surtee, Gauteng Education MEC Barbara Creecy, Sello Hatang of the Nelson Mandela Centre of Memory, Miss South Africa, Marilyn Ramos and 92-year-old Sam Oken who was a former pupil at Bertrams.

The celebration also marked the 95th birthday of Bertrams, and numerous donations were made to assist the school with the great work that they were doing.

On Mandela’s birthday, Lead SA joined thousands of others across the world to honour Madiba’s legacy by volunteering time and services for 67 minutes at 16 schools in Gauteng and the Western Cape.

Mandela Day will be the start of a campaign to encourage South Africans to volunteer 20 hours of service ahead of the country’s 20th year of democracy which will be marked in April next year.
