Metro cop investigated

YEOVILLE - A Metro police officer who was allegedly driving at high speed and collided with two cars, two pedestrians and smashed into a streetlight pole in Yeoville is under the investigation.

Metro police spokesperson Superintendent Wayne Minaar said the 35-year-old officer blacked out and lost control of the vehicle. Minaar said the officer was slightly injured. He was taken to hospital and was discharged.

He said the officer would be taken for medical tests to determine the cause of his blackout. “The medical tests will help to see if corrective steps need to be taken against the officer.”

Yeoville police spokesperson Constable Thabo Malatji said the two pedestrians were taken to hospital. “One had head injuries and one was also injured, but I still have to confirm his condition.”

According to an eyewitness, who identified himself as Jabulani, the Metro police vehicle was driving at a high speed. He said, “It was not just driving fast, it was flying. One pedestrian just flew and fell on top of another car, I think it was about five metres away.”

Minaar added that the pedestrians were also discharged form hospital after they were treated for minor injuries.
