One square mile equals Alex

ALEXANDRA - Meshack Mavuso, best known for his roles on the SABC 3 soapie, Isidingo, celebrates Alexandra's 100 years with a tribute theatre musical at The Victory Theatre in Houghton, along Louise Botha Avenue, starting this Friday until 19 July.

Mavuso, along with his childhood friend, Zakhele Mabasa, co-produced ‘One Square Mile’, which is a musical theatre production in celebration of Alexandra’s centenary of existence. ‘One Square Mile’ relives the township’s vibrancy on stage, tells the untold stories in a form of art; from how this well-known township came into existence; living in the music footsteps from the suburbs, drafting the

hardships and triumphs by its people, for the masses.

“One Square Mile is a potpourri of music, dance and singing a racy piece of high art will bring the important aspects of Alex to life a kaleidoscope of bright colour costumes accompanied by high-energy dancing from pantsula , mkhukhu and modern dancing. It captures all of Alexandra’s cultures. It takes you down memory lane from the 1957 Alexandra Bus Boycott, and to the Msomi and the Spoilers gangs.

“We are excited to bring the history of Alexandra to life. What better way to do it, than on stage? We hope that this artistic display will leave the audience with valuable insight and encourage many to appreciate the challenges and the victories of those that came before us, thus inspire today’s generation to strive for greater heights in the wake of opportunities at our present day’s disposal,” said Mavuso, adding, “One Square Mile promises to be a spectacular thought-provoking work of art and do not miss it, for one week only.”
