According to an eyewitness, a BMW ran a red light on William Nicol Drive at the intersection of 2nd Road and hit a Peugeot soon after 12pm on 10 July. The BMW then fled the scene and drove down 2nd Road and came to a stop at the corner of Waterfall Avenue and Talbragar Avenue. The witness, a passenger in another car, said that he’d seen the accident and they decided to follow the vehicle to ask them why they hadn’t stopped. They parked behind the BMW and he got out of the car and started taking pictures with his phone.

He explained, “The guys started getting out, really casual, and then I saw the gun.” He added that one man jumped into the passenger seat of the car and pointed the gun at the driver who accelerated.

The driver said that a struggle then ensued as he grabbed the barrel of the gun. He said that multiple shots were fired inside the car before it veered off the road and collided with a wall.

Behind the wall was a beehive. The enraged bees then encircled and entered the car as the gunman got out and fled with his accomplices on foot towards Jan Smuts Avenue. A resident from a nearby property reported hearing the shots and seeing the men running up the road while removing items of clothing, possibly due to the bees.

Emergency services were on the scene quickly and treated the two victims for bee stings and minor abrasions. Police then arrived and a search for the suspects began. At the time of writing, the victim’s car was still full of bees making it impossible for anyone to get too close.
