Famous restaurant owner dies

JOBURG - One of the co-founders of Gramadoelas restaurant in Johannesburg, Brian Shalkoff, died on 1 July.

Shalkoff sustained fatal injuries during an attack by four armed men last month, and he had been on life support since then.

Shalkoff and his partner Eduan Naude were on the way to their flat located on the outskirts of Hillbrow when they were ambushed.

Naude has decided to close down the restaurant at the end of July 2013, and the staff were said to be overwhelmed with grief.

Gramadoelas has been operating since 1992 and hosted statesmen, actors and musicians such as Bill Clinton, Denzel Washington, Charlize Theron, Nick Nolte, Morgan Freeman, David Bowie and Elton John.

Market Theatre CEO Annabell Lebethe said, “All of us at the Market Theatre Foundation are in a state of shock at the sudden passing of Brian. Brian and Eduan are part of the family and have been with the Market Theatre for many years. His passing is untimely and his memory will remain with us for many years to come.”
