Calling all women to own their success

It aims to encourage women to do some honest self-reflection, become aware of their accomplishments and continue to use their voices to empower other women.

Encouraging women across the country to own their success has proven to be powerful.

To provide a safe space for women to start honest and positive conversations, financial services company Momentum hosted a virtual discussion as part of its She Owns Her Success campaign on 26 August. The overall campaign, which first began during Women’s Month last year, aims to encourage women to do some honest self-reflection, become aware of their accomplishments and continue to use their voices to empower other women.

The discussion hosted a number of fierce personalities across various industries, including Momentum’s chief marketing officer Nontokozo Madonsela, entertainment personality and businesswomen Elana Africa-Bredenkamp and educator and journalist Esther Wojcicki, who shared their personal experiences and advice to aspiring women. According to Momentum’s chief marketing officer, Nontokozo Madonsela creating conversations such as this motivates more women to take up their place in the business sector.

“When we look at the behaviour in the boardroom and in business overall, men tend to show up with a very confident disposition in conversations and women tend to be a little more polite, quieter, shy and apologetic in how they come across,” said Madonsela.

She added that the power of this campaign translated to Momentum’s drive to promote inclusivity, diversity and transformation. “Momentum is a brand that is all about enabling success, we are a business that is grounded on advice,” she added.

Madonsela believes this this is the most opportune time for South African women to realise their potential and shatter barriers to success. “Take up your place, you are a child of the universe and playing [your] small part does not serve the world.”

She said women should not feel apologetic or shy about their accomplishments and success. “Whatever their definition of success is, it is valid.

“With the phrase ‘success gains more success’ – unless you are able to give your success a voice you will miss out on brilliant opportunities and your livelihood of having momentum in your journey will be diminished.”
