The Hirsch family started their appliance business in a tiny showroom in Umhlanga Rocks Drive, Durban, in 1979 with just R900 that they had saved.
Forty years later Hirsch’s has grown into a chain of mega appliance, electronics and home furnishing stores in KZN, Cape Town and Gauteng. One of their Gauteng branches is located in Dunkeld West, Hyde Park.
They have won multiple awards for their service ethic and Hirsch’s stores are not only places where one can shop for the home, but with their regular networking events, they have also become meeting places for business people, young mums, aspiring chefs and domestic workers.
Commenting on their milestone birthday on January 29, CEO of the company, Allan Hirsch said he couldn’t believe that 40 years had passed since they started Hirsch’s. “The growth that we have had over the years and the people who have assisted us, and the support that we have had from the public for the last 40 years has been phenomenal.
“It’s true to say that working hard and getting the basics right on a daily basis pays. That is what we’ve done. We have had amazing people that have worked with us over the years, and we owe a lot to them.”
He added that he felt proud of what they have achieved so far and believes that there are more opportunities on their way not only for the company but for South Africa. By looking after people, Hirsch said they found that the people have looked after them. “When people ask me what the key to success is, I say that it is a combination of getting everything in the right order at the right time. When one consistently gets the basics done, one will become successful.”
The CEO stated that through the celebrations they would have numerous specials. He said Hirsch’s have had great support from their suppliers who are helping to enjoy their 40th year in business and are passing these on to the consumer who has kept them in business for the past 40 years.
Hirsch said, “Thank you, we appreciate you, and we are so grateful that you have kept us going for all this time.”
