Bringing canoeing victory from the Free State

PARKTOWN – A learner from Parktown Girls' partnered with a member from a canoeing club in Emmarentia and both achieved second place in a race held in Free State.

A learner from Parktown Girls High School managed to finish a canoeing race at a river in the Free State. Alexis Rich from the school, partnered up with Kevin Middleton from the Emmarentia-based club, Dabulamanzi, to enjoy the wild waves and challenges of the Liebensbergvlei River.

Victoria Lake Canoe Club, based at Germiston Lake, hosted the Gauteng Canoe Union Mixed Doubles Championships river race on the river. Mixed doubles, is a male / female combination. Rich has paddled school league for some years and is enjoying her year of river paddling. She partnered up with Middleton in the championships and covered a distance of 32km.

The pair finished the race in 02:15:00, as the sixth K2 to finish the race in second position in the ‘senior’ category; although Rich is a junior, her partner is a senior and she, therefore, raced in the older category as he is not allowed to race as a junior.

The river flows between Bethlehem and Frankfort in the Free State, starting at Reitz Waterworks, and finishing at a little town called Tweeling with free-flowing clean, clear, cool water from the Lesotho Highlands project.
