Rockies wins Two Oceans

PARKVIEW – Local running club beats the rest at the Two Oceans.

Rocky Road Runners continued its string of successes in South African road running by taking first place in the best male team category at the Old Mutual Two Oceans Marathon.

The club in Parkview has only had an elite athlete programme for 18 months, so when it sent an elite team to Cape Town over the Easter weekend, it did not quite know how they would fare despite some excellent results before the race.

However, the 56km race was made to look easy by Raphael Segodi, who was sixth overall in the men’s race, and Puleng Maeko who finished close behind in seventh.

Segodi completed the ultra marathon in 3:12:21 while Maeko crossed the line nearly a minute and a half later in 3:13:46.

Rofhiwa Mathidi and Lucas Rantho completed the four-man team and their times of 3:22:45 and 3:31:09 gave the outfit the best combined time for a team.

“Rockies is very proud of the achievement of these runners,” said Saul Levin, chairperson of the club.

“We believe that they are world-class athletes who are starting to come into their own. We are looking forward to seeing great things from them in the future.”

He added that Rockies was a community club that decided to support the elite athletes with the goal of strengthening running and improving the sport.

“We are pleased that these efforts have had a positive impact.”

Earlier in the year, Maeko won the Johnson Crane Marathon and Mathidi won the Pick n Pay 2018 Marathon.

The elite team also secured a host of podium finishes at races across Gauteng this year and last.
