Chairperson of The Wanderers Golf Club brings about changes

Alan Kerdachi has overseen much change in his time as chairperson at The Wanderers Golf Club and there is more on the way.

This includes building a whole new clubhouse and the sale of five hectares of land to Investec Property Fund for the establishment of a multi-purpose facility.  Kerdachi, who plays with a handicap of 14, has been a member of the club for as many years.

He was voted on to the committee to oversee the clubhouse in 2018 and was elected chairperson just one year later.  “I had strong views on things that needed to change at the club, and to his credit, my predecessor Brian Biebuyck did too and the sale of the land started under his reins,” said Kerdachi, who is also a partner at McCreedy Friedlander Property Consultants.

“I believed that our management team needed to consist of people who knew management rather than just golf. We also moved to a model where two-thirds of the golf players are not members but visitors.”

As a result of these changes, Kerdachi believes the club runs smoother and finances are looking good despite coming out of a long break during the lockdown.  “The atmosphere is unique here. A great golf experience is our priority, food is just an add-on. When we build our new clubhouse it will add to this experience.”

Kerdachi said the committee was run more openly with members having equal say in matters.  The land that is being sold to Investec Property Fund is five hectares and in the shape of an L, it runs adjacent to Rudd Road and will border Corlett Drive and the rugby field.  It is being sold for an amount agreed upon by the parties involved.

Specifics for the land’s use will be made clear within a year but its permit allows for offices, residential buildings as well as retail.
