CHOC Cows cricket fundraiser at the Wanderers is postponed

SAXONWOLD – A cricket day featuring local businesses playing at the Imperial Wanderers Stadium, has been postponed.

The CHOC Cows last man stands cricket team has had to postpone its fundraiser at the Imperial Wanderers Stadium in light of the national lockdown.

The event was supposed to raise funds for CHOC Childhood Cancer Foundation on 4 April and would have seen a number of corporate teams playing cricket in memory of Georgia Bain, who was the daughter of teammate Grant and who succumbed to brain cancer.

Before the loss of Georgia, Grant also lost his 20-month-old daughter, Jessica, to cancer.

The cricket outfit has since postponed the fundraiser with the intention to host it as soon as they can but also as late as next year, if need be.

“We’re still in pretty uncertain times,” said CHOC Cows cricketer, Dale Verster.

“So, while I would prefer to do the day sometime this year, I don’t think at this time we can, with certainty, say that stadia and the like will be granted permission to open. So we’re just holding back for the time being and watching. If not this year, then hopefully early in 2021.”

The team plays last man stands cricket at venues around Joburg including Zoo Lake Sports Club.

The group of players has been around for 10 years and were previously called BBL Night Watchmen.

They changed their name when Grant lost his daughter Jessica in December last year, and they made it their mission to also host events, and play in cow outfits, to raise money and awareness for children with cancer.
