Men of Valour given recognition

ILLOVO – A number of men were recognised at the second annual Men of Valour event at Wanderers Stadium.


Twenty five Men of Valour were given recognition at a ceremony sponsored by Panache Branding Solutions hosted at the Wanderers Stadium in Illovo on 8 December.

Men in the medical, corporate, social, literature and entertainment industries were honoured.

“These men serve as motivation to others to strive for excellence and do better in their various fields,” said Mayet, who also runs the popular Women of Wonder event.

She said that 150 men were nominated for the prestigious award, but only 25 were selected.

The Rosebank Killarney Gazette spoke to an award-winning urologist at Netcare Milpark Hospital Dr Salim Choonara.

“This award is humbling for me. It highlights what can be accomplished when you put your mind to something,” said Choonara.

He explained that he was inspired to become a doctor by his mother, who succumbed to cancer in her early years.

“This award highlights the need for us to promote education. I am so thankful for my family who has supported me despite my long hours at work.”

Humanitarian journalist at Salaamedia Azhar Vadi said his work has redefined journalism by allowing reporters to become part of the solution. Vadi explained that he has worked on a number of developmental projects in South Africa including the #RideForEducation.

“My work is not for reward, but this award signifies the hard work an entire team has put behind me. The real reward is seeing the lives changed through the work we do,” said Vadi.

Mayet said she hopes to take the competition internationally next year as more men are given praise for their impact on society.
