Boundaries galore at Wanderers Bash

The sixth annual Wanderers Bash brought boundaries galore to the fields of Wanderers Cricket Club.

The 16-over tournament saw eight teams come from all over Joburg (and one from Pretoria) to compete between 5 and 8 September.

The weather was warm and the spectators enjoyed delicious food and drink while watching from the stands.

“Most of the teams are invitation teams, not necessarily affiliated to clubs,” said Frank Auger, chairperson of the hosting club.

“The standard of the cricket improves each year, scores were made in excess of 200 in 16 overs on numerous occasions.”

The final of the tournament saw Masters beat Tsunami Army by 18 runs.

Masters batted first and scored 181/6 in their allotted 16 overs. Tsunami Army batted out their overs but could only reach 163/5.

“The Masters targeted the short boundary well in their innings and for the first time in the tournament, Tsunami Army dropped crucial catches.”

Auger said this was probably due to the pressure of it being the final.

“Tsunami Army were never able to keep up with the required run rate, despite some big hitting late on.”

Funds raised from the tournament are used to assist those unable to afford membership fees at the Wanderers.

The tournament came about when the club’s Saturday side decided in 2014 to reignite the passion for competition after a long winter break and prepare players for the club cricket season ahead.

Each year the bottom two teams are relegated and replaced, ensuring that competition is fresh each tournament.

No team has ever won the tournament twice.

“Every year we have continuously seen young talent come up the ranks and take on the challenge to outclass and outperform tough and experienced players, all for the love of the game.”
