An encounter with cancer fighter motivates man to do more

GREENSIDE – It was all about the children and raising funds at the Leadhome Pirates and CHOC Foundation fundraiser.

It was a colourful family day out at the Pirates Rugby Club in Greenside as residents made their way to a fundraiser. The fundraiser was a partnership between Leadhome Pirates and CHOC Childhood Cancer Foundation to create awareness of children’s cancer while raising funds.

Event organiser Ian Taylor shared how he met a boy in the care of CHOC and saw what a great foundation it is and this motivated him to raise funds for them.

“People don’t really talk about children’s cancer, it’s one of the things they try and avoid. So, we are trying to reach as many people out there as possible.”

He added that he approached the junior rugby club union and pitched his idea to them and they were happy to come on board and that made the event feasible. Taylor said, “We’ve got all the junior clubs playing here today, all our U13s. Vodacom also sponsored the play area for free, It’s all about the kids today.”

Communications coordinator at CHOC, Taryn Seegers added that Vodacom arranged the emergency services for the day and they had been working with the foundation throughout the season.
