Wanderers Masters Cricket League concludes with thrilling final

ILLOVO – Veteran cricket players throw up an amazing tournament at Wanderers Cricket Club.

The inaugural Wanderers Masters Cricket League finished in fine form when the last game was played between Old Edwardians and Pirates on 13 July.

Almost 500 runs were scored in the final, but Old Eds proved the best team in the league and won by 19 runs.

Man of the match went to Old Eds player, Warren Dugmore for scoring 99 runs off 58 balls, while recognition also went to Pirates player Pete de Lange for his 57 runs off 27 balls and three wickets were taken with the ball.

Wanderers, Pirates, Old Eds and Vagabonds competed in 25-over matches over the course of two months at Wanderers Cricket Club.

“There was some good quality cricket, with a number of former Proteas and provincial players turning out,” said club chairperson, Frank Auger.

Some of these former professional players included Adam Bacher and Zander de Bruyn.

“The intention of the league was to bring retired players back to the game – playing matches on a regular basis against similarly minded people – and this was achieved.”

Auger added that too many players leave the game in their 30s, and deprive younger cricketers the benefit of learning from their experience.

The league, therefore, created support and momentum for veteran cricketers and should see more teams compete next year.

“It was also agreed that the timing of the league was perfect, with the highveld winter providing ideal conditions to play cricket.”

Auger said the tournament held a bonus incentive for players hoping to be selected for the team to play in the over 50s Cricket World Cup in Cape Town in March next year.
