Dunkeld Bowls Club on the up

DUNKELD WEST – Dunkeld Bowls Club has not had to worry about declining membership as other clubs have had.

Things are ever on the up at Dunkeld Bowls Club.

While other bowls clubs in Joburg are struggling to keep members, Dunkeld is always gaining new friendly faces.

Moreover, some projects at the club are reaching completion.

The 250m² deck overlooking the greens and leafy suburb around the club is structurally complete, and so is the new secluded indoor bowling lounge with tables, chairs and a braai on the patio outside.

These are separate from the already famous restaurant and pub.

Club president, Chad Joseph said the projects still needed to be fully paid off and then the club would look at improving its already-respectable wheelchair friendliness and access.

“In terms of bowls, we are starting the second half of the JBA [Johannesburg Bowls Association] leagues. Our mixed team is struggling in their league but the 1st and 2nd men’s teams are mid-table in their leagues,” Joseph said.

He encouraged anyone interested in trying out bowls to attend their frequent free training sessions or social bowls, which is almost every afternoon.

Corporate bowls and functions are also happening regularly and attracting players.

“We are a club for the community and would welcome any ideas they have. We will soon host tea once per week for the elderly in the community, and it’s on us.”

Another project Joseph has in mind is to hold a holiday club for school learners, where they can play bowls and enjoy a lunch at the club each day.

“Bowls is not just for older people. If I had my life over I would have started to play when I was seven years old. It is lots of fun.”
