Lights shine in memory – Hundreds gather to celebrate life and support Hospice Wits

SAXONWOLD – All proceeds went to Hospice Wits to assist their work in looking after terminally ill patients who cannot afford medical care.

Hundreds of people gathered on the lawns at the Joburg Zoo on 25 November to celebrate life and support the work of Hospice Wits.

The Tree of Light which holds 2 000 globes was lit on the night and will remain at the Zoo for the duration of the holiday period to remember the lives of loved ones who have passed on.

Hospice Wits events manager Godwill Maseko explained that the annual fundraising event is about celebrating life and remembering those who have passed away.

“Everyone needs to celebrate life whether they are well or terminally ill,” said Maseko. While he was disappointed with the turnout due to rain earlier in the day, Maseko said he was pleased that the bad weather held off for the duration of the event where hundreds of families enjoyed a picnic with their loved ones.

Ben Langner came to remember his late wife alongside his children and grandchildren. Langner’s daughter Othelia Langner said, “There’s something special about having a light shining for her, especially at this time of year when we miss her most. This event helps us come together to celebrate her life. It is also a good reason to support Hospice Wits which assists others with terminally ill family members.”

Cheryl Routledge, who attended the event with her family, said, “This is a time when we remember the family members we have lost to cancer. This event also helps us to support the good work of Hospice Wits.”

Maseko explained that globes are still available to be purchased online at www.treeoflight.co.za. Hospice Wits aims to raise R750 000 to fund their work of taking care of terminally ill patients and their families who cannot afford medical treatment.
