Teams compete in league games

HYDE PARK – Two schools showcased their soccer skills on the field as they competed towards the final league game.

Two high schools went head to head during a boys’ soccer match for the Johannesburg North League. Hyde Park High School took on Crawford Lonehill College during the third round of their league with the latter visiting.

Director of sports and first team coach at Hyde Park High, Kenneth Mather, explained that the league worked just like the champions leagues. “We have four groups and the top two groups go through to the quarter-finals. We have four age groups which include U19, U16, U15 and U14 and we hope all of them make it to the finals.”

He added that they trained twice a week, with a match every week and had no choice but to work around athletics. “In way of preparation we have played against Fourways High School as well as against Blue Hills Academy the week before and we did very well in both matches.”

Going forward the coach said they would play two more schools and the league would finish on 6 September. He said he hoped they would qualify for this upcoming final league.

Marketing manager at Hyde Park High, Avril Wright said, “The results of the junior teams bode well for growth within the sport at the school.”
