Runners fill up Houghton’s streets for the Old Eds Road Race

LOWER HOUGHTON – Three runs at Old Eds Road Race take 6 000 runners through leafy streets.

A record number of runners hit the streets for the 39th annual Old Eds Road Race on 12 August.

This was the second time the run formed part of the Vitality Run Series and kicked off the four-race series this year.

The 21km and 10km races and 5km fun run were all well attended, with over 6 000 people between them.

The routes started at the Old Eds Sports Club and took runners through the leafy streets of Lower Houghton and its surrounding suburbs before returning to the club.

There were lengthy uphills but they were matched by the number of downhills so that none of the runs were too strenuous.

After reaching the finish line, runners could enjoy well-earned food and drinks while admiring their medals from completing the runs.

To top it all off, Jaguar held experience rides on a skidding surface placed in the parking lot.

Runners could step into the passenger seat while professional drivers took them for a skidding spin in the sports cars.

“The run was a great success, everything went smoothly,” said race director, Mark Mohring.

He said the entry collection went better than it did when the previous record of runners (5 000) was seen last year, and there were no serious injuries or incidents on the road, to his knowledge.

“We had the support of all the residents’ associations and ward councillors in the area. The highlight for me was that we were able to host such a big event well.”
