Vuleka St Martins children taught the fun of reading

DUNKELD – Schoolchildren had the best fun bringing their favourite book characters to life while watching mini plays from their favourite books.

It was a book-filled day for the children at Vuleka St Martin’s School as they attended Dress-up for Book Day and had the Hooked-on-Books team in their midst.

The children were asked to dress up as their favourite book or movie character since most stories are made from book stories.

According to headmistress Lizette Baker, the children would say who their character was and what book they were from as a way of getting them in the mood for reading. “We were lucky to have Hooked-on-Books here today who take a list of very nice young people’s books, act it out and enthuse the children in wanting to read.

“So, we combined the two things to have our children do their own books and dressing up on the same day as we have Hooked-on-Books.”

Estevan Coertzen from Hooked-on-Books said that their company travelled to all schools around Gauteng and sometimes they went to the Free State. Their activities included doing educational theatre shows about books and promoting reading.

“We take an insert out of the book and we perform it, but then we stop at a cliff-hanger so that the kids question what will happen next, and then we tell them if they want to find that out they will have to go and read the book,” Coertzen said.

He said that their main aim was to go to every single school, teach every single child about reading, getting them back into books and off the play stations and Xboxes and giving them more of an outdoor experience as well as encouraging them to use their minds.
