JOHANNESBURG – Most people look forward to a day off on 27 April each year but we decided to find out if they know the significance of Freedom Day.

Freedom Day, 27 April, is celebrated every year to commemorate the first post-apartheid elections held on that day in 1994. What does Freedom Day mean to you?

KHATHU RAMOVHA: It means nothing to me until we get economic freedom and power including agriculture and mining. So I am not going to spend time celebrating because I need money.
KHATU: I don’t know when it was implemented but I believe it is very significant to South Africans and citizens should celebrate and not forget where they come from.
AMANDA CELE: I haven’t thought about it, but it’s just freedom of culture, expression and love. I don’t have any special plans for it.
NINI ADAMIA: The day gives unity to people and it is a commemoration of what South Africans have been through in the past as they move forward.
