St Marys festival a hit

WAVERLY – The KwaZulu-Natal-based side, St Mary's Diocesan School was named the champions on the last day on the St Mary's Investec Hockey Festival.

 

The St Mary’s Investec Hockey Festival hosted its last day of games with some impressive performances on 8 April with KwaZulu-Natal side, St Marys Diocesan School winning the top prize.

The festival is a highlight on the St Mary’s School Waverly’s calendar and this year is the 19th year of the festival. Head of School at St Mary’s, Deanne King said, “It was again an absolute pleasure to welcome our hockey friends from around South Africa and other countries to the St Mary’s Investec Hockey Festival.There was a great atmosphere of excitement at our annual celebration of women’s sport.”

Group head of marketing at Investec, Danni Dixon said, “We are honoured to be involved in a festival like this where we help to grow the love for the game and identify promising talent,” said Dixon. “We have been able to achieve both of these goals at this year’s festival.”

The four-day festival saw more than 32 teams play some exceptional hockey with the semi-finals on 8 April seeing C&N Sekondêre Meisieskool Oranje going up against Port Elizabeth’s Collegiate Girls’ High School with a tough match ending in a Collegiate win of 1–0. St Mary’s Diocesan School Kloof and Herschel Girls’ High School from Cape Town went head to head, with the latter winning with a penalty shoot-out.

The final against Collegiate Girls’ High School and St Mary’s Diocesan School Kloof proved to be a tight game leading to a penalty shoot-out. The game changer was St Mary’s goalkeeper Nicola Havenga, who saved three attempts during the shoot-out and help solidify her school’s first festival championship since 2007.

The festival also achieved a social justice win in the form of the Investec Rhino Lifeline and Goals for Rhino initiative. The initiative saw Investec donate R200 for every goal scored at the festival to the Hoedspruit Endangered Species Centre. A total of 287 goals were scored, and along with other fund-raising initiatives, over R170 000 was raised.
