On Monday, 2 April, news that political stalwart Winnie Madikizela-Mandela had passed away plunged many South Africans into mourning. Here are some of our residents’ memories and thoughts:

MPILO DLAMIN: Though I’m not South African, what stood out for me was her strength during the struggle. She showed character and loyalty as a woman in her country.
LIBRO SETEANE: I’m very saddened by Winnie’s passing. I always used to see her around Soweto as a child. I even know where she used to live in Soweto. She was a soldier.
KALISHA PILLAY: I”ll never forget a picture in 1994 when Mandela was freed. She’s walking with him. The movie Winnie portrayed how she fought for everyone and she’s a strong woman.
JUSTIN NURSE: She had quite a bit of influence on the history of SA and we are still enjoying the benefits of what she fought for and that is what is remarkable about her.
FAITH KUNENE: She was the mother of the nation. I’m saddened by the news of her passing. We’re mourning. We’re going to her funeral, just to commemorate the queen that she was.
ATISANG RAMOKOKA: When I think about her, I remember her wonderful deeds. She was a legend. I just loved how she fought for the struggle and all that she has done for SA.
