AKA is in his element

JOBURG – AKA releases two new hit singles.

The levels keep getting higher and, in case you haven’t noticed, AKA’s two-hit release is responsible for creating some activity on the local hip-hop scene.

It seems that while other artists were still recovering from their festive season gigs and performances and/or tweeting for relevance, AKA was in his element and cooking up something in the kitchen.

For starters, fans were served Star Signs, AKA’s first single this year. The song is lyrically and musically strong and sees AKA collaborate with another hip-hop heavyweight, Stogie T, whose standout lines are considered shots at other key players in the game.

Stogie T confidently says ‘how ironic, so much Gucci but no material or music’. This is an alleged shot at both Riky Rick and Cassper Nyovest who are known to wear and rap about the clothing brand.

Stogie T then ends his verse with another shot at Nyovest  when he says, “I’m abroad can’t get Mufasa’d by antelopes.” Nyovest is also known to refer to himself as ‘Mufasa’.

Stogie T essentially considers Nyovest as a lyrically weak rapper. He likens him to prey, instead of the predator he claims to be. This comes after last year’s South African Hip Hop Awards where Stogie T got booed off stage for calling out his peers.

AKA said he released Star Signs, first, because he grew tired of people saying he doesn’t rap anymore.

Naturally, people had some opinions on the song in terms of AKA’s delivery, bars, and even the beat samples.

The opinions even extended to AKA’s second offering, Sweet Fire. The song samples the South African classic, Stimela by Ray Phiri, and is a testament to AKA’s musicality and mission to make music that lasts – presenting a meeting point for golden oldies and new school – a recipe that is needed in local hip-hop.

Sweet Fire and Star Signs occupied first and second place respectively on iTunes charts. The songs are believed to be leading singles off his upcoming album Touch My Blood which is due to be released later this year.
