#ICYMI: glitz, glamour and bubbles were the order of the day at the 134th edition of the Sun Met

JOBURG – This year’s theme guaranteed that all racegoers celebrate Afro-Chic fashion, style, and sophistication.

Glitz, glamour and bubbles were the order of the day at the second Sun Met celebrated with G.H.Mumm on Saturday, 27 January, as thousands of racing enthusiasts and fashionistas descended on the Kenilworth Racecourse in Cape Town to celebrate and witness the thrill of “Africa’s Richest Race Day.”

The 134th edition of the Sun Met saw Oh Susanna (AUS) come from behind to cause an upset and walk away with a fantastic win in the R5 million Grade 1 Sun Met.

This year’s theme, “Style Ahead of the field” guaranteed that all racegoers celebrated Afro-Chic fashion, style, and sophistication on race day.

Numerous local fashion designers flaunted breath-taking pieces in-between the races at the Entertainment Marquee leading up to the Best Dressed Competition. The Sun Met 2018 Fashion Show included designs from some of South Africa’s top fashion designers, including Khosi Nkosi, Imprint ZA, Ri.Ch Factory and House of Ole.

This year’s Best Dressed Woman was Mala Bryan, who wore a colourful Afro Chic creation. Genteelly dressed Charles Samuels, who donned a blue suit with Afro Chic detail, walked off with the Best Dressed Male Award. Both walked away with prizes to the value of R25 000 each. Judges for the Best Dressed Competition included fashionista Melody Molale and pioneering designer, Mzukisi Mbane.

Rob Collins, Chief Operating Officer at Sun International, said: “it’s our second year of taking the reigns of this prestigious racing event and we are so thrilled to bring Africa together through racing, glamour, fashion, and excitement at Kenilworth Racecourse.”

The event would not have been complete without celebrity appearances. Award‐winning magician, Dynamo, was one of the international celebrities who added some magic to the prestigious horse racing event while Olympic gold medallist Usain Bolt, who arrived via helicopter on the racecourse in true VIP style, moments before the main race took place, attended as the Chief Entertainment Officer, much to the delight of the crowd. Other local and international A-Listers attending this year’s race day included Miss Universe 2017, Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters, actor and TV presenter Siv Ngesi, rapper K.O, TV presenter Ayanda Thabethe, as well as former Miss World, Rolene Strauss.

Actor Zweli Dube and the current Miss South Africa, Ade van Heerden, hosted the live red-carpet ceremony, which also saw a toast for former Miss South Africa winners in attendance, including Joan Madibeng, Melinda Bam, and Cindy Nell.

Other local athletes in attendance at this year’s Sun Met included Bafana Bafana AFCON 1996 winners, Neil Tovey and Mark Williams.
