Selwyn Segal charity bowls day a huge success
KILLARNEY – Lawn bowls events raises funds for the Selwyn Segal Society for the Jewish handicapped.
The Killarney Country Club’s bowls section hosted yet another successful edition of the annual Selwyn Segal Bowls Day as a mixed fours bowls tournament.
The Selwyn Segal Society for the Jewish Handicapped is home to more than 100 mentally challenged adults and children of all ages, and the money raised from this event offers some degree of relief from ever increasing overhead costs at the home.
Mike Baum of the society said the commitment and determination of the organisers of the event were to be admired and commended. “We are very grateful for their ongoing support and loyalty for more than 50 years. In economic times like this, it is heartwarming to know that we have friends who are helping us to make a difference.”
The 53rd edition of the tournament saw different teams of four players each from various bowling clubs across Johannesburg including Sandrigringham, Sandton and Lombardy East participating, to name a few.
The Selwyn Segal Bowls Day has grown into probably the largest charity cash generating bowls tournament in the country, with more than R350 000 being raised on the day.
Len Chalom of Killarney Country Club thanked all the donors, corporate business leaders, members of participating bowls clubs and members of the club for their generous support.
Desiree Levin of Lombardy East bowling club said, “It is a privilege and a pleasure to play in a competition of this sort, and for such a good cause. Lawn bowls is truly a-one-sport-for-life, and anyone at any stage of their life, able-bodied or disabled should try it at least once,” she said.
