Howza De Laz FC in Lyndhurst needs community support for their soccer club

LYNDHURST – If we don't do this for them we might lose them to crime and drugs.

Lazarus Matloga, owner of Howza De Laz FC in Lyndhurst, is calling on the community at large to support their club and help nurture the talent of their young players.

Matloga, who is originally from Bramley, said they have about 118 players who come from various parts of the northern suburbs of Joburg, including Alexandra.

The club comprises divisions from U13, 15, 17, 20 and a senior team and they use a small park behind the Spar in Lyndhurst to train.

The park has no proper resources for the players and it is also not generally serviced by City of Joburg’s City Parks and Pikitup.

Matloga said as a club they would appreciate a sponsor citing new kits, balls and other equipment that would help upskill the youngsters.

“At the moment we are running the club from our own pockets and it makes it difficult for us to travel when we have to play away matches.

“We would really appreciate local businesses, parents and just football lovers and professionals to give a helping hand to ensure the success of these young players,” he said.

If we don’t do this for them we might lose them to societal mishaps such as crime and substance abuse, added Matloga.

Ward 81 councillor Irene Rugheimer confirmed that the park was not ‘conducive’, saying these youngsters deserved a much more decent facility.

Rugheimer said she had approached City Parks to help refurbish the park and put in the required goalposts and nets for the youth.

She said she would also try to mobilise local businesses to support and sponsor these boys.

“I want City Parks to level the ground for the boys to be able to go through their paces and to equip the park and even make it look nice.

“I’m passionate about what Matloga is doing because he helps to remove these youths from the streets and away from crime. He diverts their energy into developing their talent,” said Rugheimer.
