The German Scout Hall Stormwater Culvert in Parktown is part of the JRA’s efforts to improve infrastructure and mitigate flooding risks in the city.

The Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) commenced critical remedial works on the collapsed channel for the First German Scout Hall stormwater culvert in Parktown on October 8.

The R11.9 million project will involve the construction of a concrete channel, a concrete pipe trench, and a brick manhole. Additionally, a fence will be erected to barricade the channel, ensuring public safety.

“This project is a testament to our commitment to addressing infrastructure challenges and ensuring the safety of our residents. We are confident that these remedial works will significantly improve the stormwater drainage capacity in the area and mitigate the risk of flooding,” said JRA CEO Zweli Nyathi.

The first phase of the project is expected to be completed within seven months.

The MMC for Transport Kenny Kunene emphasised the importance of investing in infrastructure to enhance the quality of life for residents.

“This project aligns with our vision of a resilient and sustainable city. By investing in our infrastructure, we are creating a safer environment and stimulating economic growth through job creation.”

The project is expected to benefit two SMMEs and 15 local workers, contributing to the local economy.

The work includes site clearance, removal of trees, demolition of existing concrete, rock fill foundation, mass concrete, steel reinforcement, cast in-situ concrete retaining wall, waterproofing, fencing, manhole installation, and laying of the concrete pipe culvert.
