Tributes flow for Greenside Highs head boy

Reza has left a deep sadness within his school community, where his bright spirit and guiding presence were truly valued.

Reza Saloogee (18) was the kind of young man whose presence could light up a room, and whose absence now casts a long shadow over those who knew him. The matric pupil and head boy at Greenside High School’s life was tragically cut short in a drowning accident at the Vaal Dam. His body was recovered on August 13, bringing a devastating end to a three-day search that left his family and friends in deep sorrow.

Reza and his family were enjoying a fishing trip at the dam on August 11. As they were getting ready to leave after spending the day there, Reza went back to the water to retrieve some items. Unfortunately, strong winds caused the items to move farther into the water. Even though Reza was a strong swimmer, he was unable to retrieve the items and was tragically pulled under by the strong current. Despite his efforts to swim back, the combination of the powerful wind and current proved too much, and he disappeared beneath the water.
