Parktown based learners shine at karate championship

Karate sisters, Daniella and Eva Levy, began the martial art in Grade R.

Deutsche Internationale Schule Johannesburg learners, Daniella and Eva Levy, walked away as bronze and silver medal winners at the recent Karatenomichi World Federation (KWF) SA National Children and Youth Championship.

Eva explained that she began karate when she was in Grade R, “When I was in Grade R, a boy punched me in the face and gave me a black eye. Thanks to that kid, I started karate, and became the karateka I am today. Jiyu Ippon Kumite is semi-free karate sparring, which I learned 3 years ago.”

Daniella noted that she started karate in grade R, 7 years ago. She learned Jiyu Ippon Kumite in 2023.

She added that winning a bronze medal in the kata, where one had to perform a sequence of karate movements, was great.

The two siblings juggle their academics and martial arts by prioritising academics, and then attending karate practice for an hour twice a week at Dorfman Karate.

Eva expressed her pride after obtaining a bronze and silver medal, “I’m proud because I’m a red belt, and beat some more experienced brown belt competitors. I also won a silver medal in the Kihon Ippon Kumite, another kind of sparring.”
