Four Union for Jewish Women (UJW) sewing students have sewed their way to graduation.
The graduation ceremony was held at Oxford Shul in Riviera on July 4.
Sewing school manager Ariane Heneck said, UJW established an empowerment sewing school in 2010 with the assistance of donors.

“The school was established to alleviate SA’s most pressing problems, including unemployment. Since then, the school has seen over 108 students learn new skills and graduate from our sewing programme.”
Sewing school teacher Nomvula Setuke thanked the UJW students and donors for giving her the opportunity.

Student Boifang Masilo said she began the programme not having a clue about a sewing machine or sewing garments. “The sewing opportunity has made me confident because I know how to make a dress, pants, and other garments.”

Fellow student Zamokuhle Thando Zwane said the experience had been amazing. She added that not knowing how to sew, to be a professional seamstress in four months, was a big deal for her.
