DP World Lions head coach looks forward to 2024 season

DP World Lions head coach Shaun Pretorius says attitude, commitment, and professionalism with integrity will be prioritised by his players this year.

DP World Lions women’s head coach Shaun Pretorius said his team’s attitude, commitment, and professionalism with integrity would be prioritised during this year’s cricket season.

Reflecting on the 2023 cricket season, Pretorius highlighted that the year was a roller coaster ride due to the team leading, and then losing after being in a good position to win.

“There were great chases from our batters to chase 250-plus twice and we were always positive in everything we did. Everyone bought into the team plan and the way of doing things both behind the scenes and on the park.”

He added lessons from last year including focusing on the job at hand and not worrying about other fixtures. Also, grafting and embracing every opportunity available and leaving it all out on the field.

The head coach noted that cricket players trained three to four days for three hours per day. It included an individual gym programme, training as a team which included nets and fielding with some conditioning and then also recovery.

“Mostly we train every morning but allow time for evening sessions to cater to our scholars and working players.”

Pretorius said they’ve stuck with the bulk of players for the past few seasons. “Shabnim Ismail, Sinalo Jafta and Chloe Tryon have joined and give so much when they are at training. Look out for Karabo Meso, a wicket-keeper and batter, she is looking to set the world alight.”

He said the last four weekends of the season would be tough due to the team playing log leaders Western Province and KZN Coastal which will test the team’s skills and mindset in pressure situations.
