Karabo Meso discusses the importance of unity in sports

Karabo Meso went through the KFC mini cricket programme for a few years before being introduced to hardball cricket at the Soweto Hub.

South Africa U19 women’s cricket team wicketkeeper Karabo Meso is proving that the women’s game is on the up.
And during this Women’s Month, she believed it was about unity and recognising the hard work and contribution of women.
Meso was born and bred in Soweto where she started playing cricket from the age of 14.

“I attended training sessions at the Soweto Hub where my coach nurtured and moulded my talent. I have an older sibling, Lehlohnolo who also played cricket at the hub, so I would tag along until the coach encouraged me to play after seeing my cricketing capabilities.”

Karabo Meso plays in the 5th T20 match between SA U19 Women and India U19 Women at the Tuks Oval.

Meso added that her favourite moment was when she was selected for the South Africa U19 team for the World Cup.

Before that, she had attended the KFC mini-cricket programme for a few years before being introduced to hardball cricket. At the age of 14, she made her Lions senior women’s team debut in Cape Town.

She noted women’s cricket still had a long way to go. “I think women’s cricket is being recognised and it can be a serious career for women who wish to pursue it.”
