Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital health worker rushed to causality after an attack
The Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital condemned in the strongest terms the attack and mugging of a healthcare worker.
Charlotte Maxeke Academic Hospital spokesperson Tabudi Madisha said an attack on a healthcare worker was an attack on our most vulnerable communities.
“One of the National Health Laboratory Service staff members on August 2, was assaulted with a hammer and robbed of her cell phone inside the lift in Block 1, Level 6. The staff member fought back and managed to escape the lift with serious injuries to her head.”
One of the health workers heard a woman screaming, and when she rushed to help, the culprit ran away.
Madisha added the staff member was rushed to casualty where she was stabilised and later transferred to another health facility for further treatment.
Through CCTVs, security managed to identify the culprit and handed over the footage to the police.
“According to our preliminary report, the suspect is a black male on a crutch, and who can only speak English. The suspect is tall, dark in complexion, and he was wearing a green jacket.”
Corporate communications SAPS Johannesburg, Captain Jeff Phora confirmed that Hilbrow police were investigating.

The hospital’s management assured employees, patients, and the general public that their safety would always be a priority. That is why security personnel were on-site 24/7 and the hospital had increased the number of cameras in high-risk areas.
