A photo studio in Rosebank hosted the Sandton SPCA for their 2024 calendar launch.

The Sandton SPCA hosted a successful launch of their yearly calendar at the Rosebank Mall.

To compile the calendar, Sandton SPCA committee member Florence Thom said they had a photo shoot sponsored by Emma O’Brien whose studio is in Rosebank.

“We used cats and dogs adopted from the SPCA for the Sandton SPCA 2024 Calendar photo shoot. We have a couple of sponsors also who sponsored a page for each month. The people whose animals are photographed paid for the photo shoot. Emma gave us a huge discount and a lot of pro-bono work,” said Thom.

She added the sale of the calendars helped raise funds for the SPCA because the organisation was self-funded. Each calendar cost R100.

A senior inspector at Sandton SPCA Stephen Maila said as a volunteer for 20 years, he had learnt that the SPCA had an incredible role in society whereby they are the voice of the voiceless. He said it wasn’t easy to educate people on behalf of the animals.

He said people in general appreciated the importance of animals but they didn’t understand that animals have the same rights as humans. He said the SPCA Sandton’s jurisdiction covered Lonehill to the south of Johannesburg.

“A lot of people mistake Sandton SPCA as being in a rich area that makes a lot of money but that is not the case. SPCA doesn’t get any government funds but what keeps it going is the support of the community. All proceeds of the SPCA go to the animals. The animals that come through the doors of the SPCA need to be fed and made comfortable and we do everything possible to enhance the welfare of those animals,” concluded Maila.

He added that the SPCA has to deal with a lot of complaints and animals in places such as Alexandra, Malvern and south of Johannesburg.

“We not only focus on dogs and cats but we also take care of chickens sold on the side of the road; animals kept under very horrendous conditions.” He encouraged all to buy as many calendars as they can in support of the SPCA.

Sandton SPCA committee chairperson Nick Smith thanked Wilna Lamb for putting everything together as well as all volunteers, sponsors and attendees.
