A four-month storm water drain leak in Houghton continues to spew thousands of litres of clean water

Johannesburg Water blames the procurement of external services for the delay in fixing the leaking storm water drain.

Johannesburg Water blames the procurement of services from an external service provider for an unattended four-month stormwater drain in Houghton.

The entity’s external communications officer, Nolwazi Dhlamini said, “When procuring the services of an external service provider, there are internal procedures that need to be followed, hence the time it is taking for the repairs to take place. Johannesburg Water’s technical team was waiting for the panel of contractors to be finalised.”

She added that the next step is to draft the scope of the project and invite the contractors for a site briefing so that they can submit quotations for approval.

The Gazette first reported about the leaking stormwater drain in May this year. A Linksfield resident, Rob Kaplan, who usually takes strolls in Houghton, reached out to the paper after his concerns about the clean water being lost for the then past two months.

Dhlamini noted that the trunk main valve needs to be replaced and the entity was waiting for the tender process of appointing the panel of contractors and that process was eventually finalised.
