Sandringham residents conduct fruitful blanket drive

Two friends from Sandringham have through a blanket drive collected 434 blankets for animals this winter.

Animals in selected shelters need not suffer the winter’s cold thanks to a blanket drive by two Sandringham residents. Tzipporah Berman and friend Tasha Smith have raised 434 blankets through a Winter Animal Blanket Drive they began at the end of May.

Berman said they did the drive last year but this year they were going bigger. She said they had given 100 blankets to each shelter and the remaining would go to the Sandton SPCA. The four rescue centres that received blankets are Woodrock Animal Rescue, Animal Allies, Dogs Trust and Underdogs South Africa Rehabilitation Centre.

“We got an amazing donation from Pimp my Pup who donated 15 blankets. Between using Wallet doc, Yoco machine and standing in front of Tiberius on Friday afternoons, we raised money for over 434 blankets. I went to Game in Rosebank and bought all their blankets and they had to get more from another one of their stores which was amazing,” Berman said.

Lee Romalho from Dogs Trust said they’re a shelter rehabilitation centre and also do outreach in Diepsloot. “We get surrendered abused, neglected dogs from Diepsloot which we rehabilitate and rehome. We also go to Diepsloot every day and we medicate, feed, give shelter, blankets,” Romalho said.

She added that on an average month, they feed about a ton of food to the dogs between Diepsloot and their shelter. Romalho said they’re always in need of blankets, kennels and more.

She said, “We’re actually helping in another township called Ga-Rankuwa in Pretoria at the moment through a massive outreach. This is actually earmarked for that. We will have a sterilising drive on July 23. Our ethos is that each dog that is sterilized goes home with a kennel, bag and a blanket.”

Tiberius restaurant manager Dovie Binder said they were always happy to help in anything that has to do with animals and they were happy to help people too.
