‘Most wanted’ man in custody after a collaborative effort between CAP and SAPS

CAP CEO Mark Jaarsveld said, "The arrest is a significant accomplishment for our teams and a testament to the determination and dedication put in by all key role players."

CAP CEO Mark Jaarsveld confirmed the arrest of the ‘most wanted’ man on February 10.

Jaarsveld said SAPS Serious and Violent Crime unit and CAP announced the arrest of the suspect known as Johannesburg’s ‘most wanted’.

“This individual was wanted in connection with over 100 house robberies in the northern suburbs of Johannesburg over the past eight years. In October 2022, following information received, the SAPS Serious and Violent Crimes Unit, SAPS JHB K9, JHB CI, and the CAP Special Operations Division initiated a full investigation into a house robbery syndicate. Through a joint effort, the teams were able to arrest three suspects, recover a firearm and a stolen vehicle in November 2022.”

The CEO added that during the arrest, a shoot-out ensued with the suspects which resulted in the prime suspect being critically wounded and resulted in the suspect being transported to hospital under police guard.

He explained, “During this time, he provided authorities with a false name, and the identification process was subsequently delayed due to his injuries. After further investigation and collaboration between SAPS Serious and Violent Crimes unit and SAPS Fairlands, the true identity of the suspect was established via positive fingerprint with matches and confirms that the suspect arrested in November 2022 is Johannesburg’s ‘most wanted’.”

Jaarsveld said CAP legal department worked closely with members of the SAPS and confirmed that the suspect was denied bail and remained in custody.

“He will be charged for a multitude of crimes which occurred throughout Johannesburg, mainly house robberies in Bedfordview, Bryanston, Birdhaven, Emmarentia, Fairlands, Forest Town, Greenside, Glenhazel, Houghton, Linksfield, Northcliff, Morningside, Melrose, Norwood, Oakland’s, Parkview, Parktown, Parkwood, Sandton, Sandringham, Senderwood, Strathavon, Saxonwold and Westcliff.”

The paper reached out to SAPS’ provincial office, and awaits a comment from Captain Mavela Masondo.
